From August 13 to 18 this year, join me, Fletch, 

for a five night meditation retreat in the serene

surroundings of Northland's beautiful Whāngaruru

Harbour. This retreat will help deepen your

meditation practice, concentrate the mind, and 

generate insights to help you on your personal

journey. Whether you're an experienced meditator

or not, and even if you've never meditated before,

this retreat, bringing together like-minded people and creating an environment of deep practice, might be just the mid-winter escape you're looking for.   

The retreat will be centred around exploring the Buddha's Four Noble Truths, truths that form the foundation of living with eyes truly open. They also provide a framework for living a life of higher meaning and purpose, a spiritual life. Focused for the beginner, talks and discussion will captivating and digestible.   

What to Expect:

  • Four Daily Meditation Sessions: Engage in practices rooted in traditional Buddhist mindfulness, including ananpanasati (mindfulness of breathing), vipassana, and Metta Bhavana (loving-kindness) .

  • Meditation Guidance: This retreat is designed with those early on their meditation journey in mind - I'm not going to leave you in silence for two hour stretches or anything like that - I'll give you all the tuition you need. 

  • Daily Dharma Talks - Centring around the Buddha's Four Noble Truths and followed by discussion and reading material. 

  • Delicious Food and Communal Living: Wholesome vegetarian food three times a day, tea and coffee, fruit and snacks. Cooking and wash-up responsibilities will be shared amongst retreat participants but led by a retreat manager.  

  • Optional Silence: Silence will not be enforced but is looked upon kindly as a way of helping look deeper inside ourselves.  

  • Comfortable Meditation Seating: Options to sit on the floor with cushions and bolsters or on a chair. 

  • Opportunity to Explore: Enjoy The Farm's unique and beautiful surroundings or relax in the library or spacious lounge during daily free-time.

  • Nightly Saunas (!): The Farm purpose built earthen sauna you have the option of utilising.

Common questions

 

Who is the retreat for? 

Anyone can attend the retreat, whether you have meditated meditated before or not, under any tradition or using any technique. This course is for anyone wanting to deepen or establish their practice in a focussed period.

Do I need to know how to meditate already?

Nope, not necessary. If you haven't meditated before that's ok, I will give you all the instruction you need. 

What sort of meditation is taught and practiced through the retreat? 

Meditations circle anapanasati (breath awareness), vipassana (body awareness) and metta-bhavana (loving-kindness) techniques. 

Is bedding provided? 

Yes, all beds come with linen and blankets.  

What meditation equipment is provided?

You'll get a mat, and as many cushions and blankets as you need. Chairs are also available. You are welcome to bring equipment from home (so long as it doesn't impose on other meditators).  

Shared bathrooms?

Yep, all rooms have shared bathrooms. There are several around the property. 

Who prepares the food?

We'll all chip in on cooking and cleaning, lead by retreat staff. We'll make a small roster for other aspects of communal retreat living as well. 

Got a critical gear list?

Are phones allowed?

Nope sorry, phones will not be allowed during the course of the retreat. You can hand them in for safe keeping or leave them in your car. 

Where is The Farm?

The Farm is located 1 hour north of Whangārei, along the coastal Russell Road (approximately 40 mins from the turn-off at Whakapara on SH1). It's approximately 3-3.5 hours north of Auckland. Get in touch if you want help organising car pooling or a ride.
